Fleet Electrification & Grid Services
Our team has worked on fleet transitions from the federal program level down to individual organizations. We can support fleets across the country—campus, school district, municipal, etc.—to plan their transition, secure funding, and turn charging infrastructure into a grid asset.

Electric school buses providing grid services
Electric school buses spend most of the day parked, on predictable schedules, with large batteries. That makes them one of the best candidates for vehicle-to-grid service in any fleet. Updraft Energy developed, organized, and moderated a session for STN Expo West on electric school buses, managed charging, and the ability for EVs to serve as energy assets for the grid.
Grant (Updraft co-founder) led the discussion on Fremont Unified School District’s vehicle-to-grid (V2G) electric school bus project, with insights from their transportation director, Ernest Epley, and Pacific Gas and Electric Company’s vehicle-grid integration expert, Rudi Halbright.
It was a great conversation around the opportunities for fleets to earn revenue and provide the grid with resiliency benefits, with plenty of honest advice on real challenges and conditions required to make these deployments worthwhile. While V2G is mostly in the pilot stage due to technical complexity and murky incentive structures across different utility environments, Rudi laid out the opportunity in simple terms: There is no way the best use for a school bus is to sit there parked most of the time if it could do something else.
